If you are a forumite (what a word) like me you would notice how often this single word comes up. I'm sure you are all familiar with it,
Spam
.
Now many of you are wondering what spam is. This thread will tell you all about it. I have devised a little FAQ so you will always know about spam, as it has recently become an unwritten rule. If you read this thread, we should never see you spamming, and we encourage you to help us enforce the rule. So, without further adieu, from the penguin himself, I give you *drum roll please*
Duke's Spam FAQ
What is spam anyways?
Many things fit into the category of spam. It is not easy to explain, as there is no "definite" type of spam. Here are a few ways you can tel someone is spamming.
•Double posting
We all know what this is! A double post is when you say a complete idea in two posts such as "I agree" in one post, followed by "But you may want to change it by (blah blah blah". If you can easily put one idea into one post, do it! Double posting qualifies as spam, even if its a mistake.
•Multiple thread posts
Say somebody makes a thread congratulating you on your 100th post. Well every "Congrats" you get, you say "thanks mate!". So (Italics being other users) it would look like congrats Thanks congrats Thanks etc... You don't have to say thanks to every person!
If you notice in Star threads and stickies, the author of the thread may say thanks only a few times in the early life of the thread. After that, they usually leave it alone. That is the right way to do it. Not a thanks after every post.
The other way that this is spam often happens in off topic, where a user replies to the thread after another person posts. This offense is pretty much like double posting, but worse because you are often doing it more than once.
•Un-needed posts
This may be the most common one! A user posting something that does not contribute to the main idea of the topic. For example, if I make a post of my views on a Feature request, then the next user says "I agree with you duke" and that's it, what is the point of that?
If you do something like "I agree with duke because/here's why", then you are helping the topic, which has a point. Only if your post is actually contributing to the topic in some way, you should post.
•Nonsensical Posts
Do I even need to explain this one? Posts that don't even make sense, are off topic, and belong in the trash can. Posts like "sjaksdfkahda" and "I like corn flakes" all fit into this category. Sip does like corn flakes, they are his favorite American food!
Ok, now that I know about spam, how can I avoid it?
Well, follow the rules! We all know how to be good users, it is inside all of us. You just need to let it out and keep it there. Breaking down the four main offenses, here is how you should behave (in short, like dag :D)
•Double Posting
I think we all know what this is...
Oh wait, I'm supposed to post how to avoid it? Alright :) Let's try again.
•Double Posting
Think about your post before you make it! Use your head and say, "Okay, is there anything else I want to say?". If there is, say it! Don't wait for a double post, as you would not be following the rules >:(
•Multiple thread posts
You have to contain yourself and make sure you don't post too much. Just make a post every 10 and just say "Thanks everyone!". To be honest, I hardly thank anyone (I am mean :P) in my threads...
•Un-Needed Posts
Just don't post... If you can't say anything special, just don't! Make sure your post has something to do with the thread, and is not just, "I agree with soso". Just remember of the great saying, Quality not quantity!
•Nonsensical Posts
If you do one of these I will have you in a headlock for 5 days... End of story :P. Only people in serious need of attention will actually do this. It isn't funny, its just embarrassing.
What is my punishment for spam posting?
You'd better not find out! If you are warned by an FA for spam posting, stop! If you don't listen to a warning, you will get a small ban. The next time you do it, a bigger one. And bigger, and bigger... This applies WITH ALL forum rules.
YIKES! So if I see a user spamming, should I tell them?
Of course! Here is something you can copy/paste to warn them:
Please do not spam in the forums mate, read the Spam FAQ in Aid Kit II, and you'll know why and how you should avoid it!
Why am I asking this Question?
You tell me! I'm tired of answering questions, so get out of here and remember that if you spam, your slammed! (A dumb rhyme but it was the best I could think of :P).
Now you know, so you'd better not do it! :P
