"*Breaking News* We interrupt your cups or matches for an important PS news bulletin.

just a few minutes ago, there was an earthquake in Virginia that had a magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter Scale. The tremors could be felt as far as New York City and here on Long Island amazingly. I didn't feel anything but did hear metal rattle a bit which I did find weird and then my mom shouting in panic calling me and my little brother into the living room. She's from Peru and they have had tremors down there. At first I thought it was possibly a train passing by being how I do live near some train tracks and whenever a train passes by, the ground does shake a bit but there was no train. It was the real deal when I saw the news on TV that this happened. For sure it must have been something intense for the folks down in Virginia and I didn't know Virginia was on a plate tectonic boundary. So what it was we felt up here in New York were the aftershocks. Hopefully everyone down in Virginia is alright and that we won't be feeling any other shock waves.

I'll add more info to this thread as news unravels about this earthquake. If you felt this tremor, post your thoughts and reactions.

*This was a PS Breaking News Bulletin. We now resume with your cups and matches*

edited title to Virginia from North Carolina.

Live in New York City, did feel the vibration of the earthquake...the impact mostly happened on the eastern side of New York and some parts of Brooklyn. Most tall building were seen shaking and there were also evacuated. Hope things go well in North Carolina.

Im here in Virginia and there is kind of a embarrassing story about me after I felt the quake but before we go there lets talk about it. Here I am in my house with only my mom and 2 of my sisters while one felt it in college she told us over via Skype chat and my dad driving at work has no idea what is going on with everybody because he didn't feel it (I heard you couldnt feel it in a car since your already moving). It started like a tiny shake, I myself felt as if it was a airplane like 50 yards above our house which is closer than you think. Then it got stronger and my sister was watching T.V. and said the only thing that moved or fell was a picture. All of the sudden my mom comes screaming to me saying "GET OUT OF THE HOUSE EARTHQUAKE". We all got out but there were surprisingly a few people outside and the rest were at their balcony porches just viewing any damage then going back in like it was nothing serious. When we got inside our TV is the first thing you see and the funny thing was that I put a reminder on our tv for the movie "2012" and our family had a nice laugh for about a minute but we were all still scared. After the earthquake we were all calling family or friends nearby and still are. My sisiter said she has 50 friends online on Facebook talking about it. But now on tv they said that the Earthquake in Japan was 10,000 times stronger so image it for them. But now there is no damage here in Virgina and thank god for that.

I wish you all a safe next few days and get better if any damage has been done to your family.

Now to the slightly embarrassing part...

I was all getting ready to take a shower and as soon as i stepped the the ground started shaking. I got out only wearing and my pants. I ignorantly told my mom "lemme put my shirt on first before we get out" but she told me no theres no time. We all got out without shoes when everybody else was outside i felt embarrassed. But then some other people got out with their shirt off too and nobody cared so it was kinda funny.

Btw, i came online to post about this but you beat me to it :(

My mom told me about it. I have been hearing a lot about how areas are due to have earthquake and what people need to do to prevent stuff from going really bad from quakes.

Stay safe (to those affected). Praying for ya'.

Luckily wasn't that bad (5.8) and not much or barely any damage... Up here where I live in Canada believe it or not, we have about once or twice a year earthquakes of 5, as I believe were near a fault.

I was in Vermont at the time, and felt it a tiny bit, but barley anything xD

This is nothing Compared to California earthquakes and a 5.8 earthquake is nothing compared to bigger ones we have (7.8 the last one over a year ago i think)

Yet i was seeing the news and since we r use to them ppl r saying that there over reacting

Hope everyone is alright, not nice particulary when people aren't used to earthquakes coz it normally signals that people are also less prepared there.

A big one hit Downtown Boston. I live in Watertown and at that time, I was talking to some friends outside. I didn't feel it at all. Weird... Reminds of OJ Simpson's Police chase when so much sport events went on. There were many sport events going on at that time too. I never knew there was one until 6:00 PM on that day when 7 News reported about that. They showed the shaking of a video clip from the Little League World Series on ESPN Sportscenter. When I saw that, it looked like that they didn't even notice what was happening. Buildings in Boston were evacuated as well.
